How to Create a Professional Invoice in 5 Steps
A good invoice is clear, complete and easy to pay. Here is a simple way to make one with the free Lumara invoice generator, without creating an account.
1. Enter your details and your customer's
Add your business name, address and contact details, and upload a logo if you have one. Then add the customer's name or company and email address. If you will invoice them again, save the customer so you can pick them from a list next time.
2. Add what you are charging for
Add one line for each product or service, with a quantity and a unit price. Short, specific descriptions such as "Logo design, three concepts" prevent questions later.
3. Apply discounts, tax and extra charges
Choose a percentage or fixed discount for each item or for the whole invoice, set a tax rate (or none), and add shipping or other charges. Totals update as you type. Our guide to how invoice totals are calculated explains the order of the steps.
4. Pick a template
Choose one of eight layouts, then set an accent colour, footer text and payment terms such as "Payment due within 14 days". Switching templates never changes what you typed.
5. Check, then print or save as PDF
Read the preview once more: the dates, the amounts and the customer's name. Then use Print Invoice or Download PDF and choose Save as PDF in your browser's print window. Our guide to saving an invoice as a PDF covers the details. You can also save the invoice in your browser and find it later under My Invoices.
Whichever tool you use, check that the invoice meets the rules that apply where you and your customer are.
